Thanks to everyone for a great Pinewood Derby race! 41 cars, and assorted guest vehicles, raced into the history books. Got any ideas for how to make that car a little faster next year!??!?

Scouts Show Compassion at December Pack Meeting TOP

Congratulations to 34 of our Scouts that earned the Fall Cubmaster Service Award. Service isn't always rewarded or recognized, but what a great chance to learn how important it is, and how good it can feel. Nice work everyone!

We also received our Quality Unit Award Ribbon, watched Den 3 and 4 perform, and tried to build houses of cards that reached the ceiling (is that why one group started on a table?).

Popcorn Sale Exceeds Expectationss TOP

Pack 71 Scouts are to be congratulated for selling over $6,000 worth of popcorn, generating over $2,000 for Council. Chase Cole led the way with selling over $1,100 of "corn." Congratulations to Chase and all the boys who took time to sell popcorn to support Scouting.

Scouts "Clean Up" at November Pack Meeting TOP

Pack 71 Scouts really showed the pride they have in themselves, their Den and their Pack as they underwent Uniform Inspection. Early results show that 100% of the Scouts passed. Congratulations.

So what should we do when our boys get cleaned up? Take Pictures! And did we ever. Below is a montage of the individual dens.

Other events at the meeting: The Pack received their Summertime Award Ribbon. Justin Adams received his Bobcat Award. Greg, Sue, Matt and Tim Franz were given many gifts for their new adoptive daughter, Elizabeth, whom they're travelling to pick up on 11/19.

Halloween Party Scares All (Except Fearless Scouts) TOP

Pack 71's Halloween Party was another resounding success. As in past years, games and refreshments kept the boys occupied, but this year the Pack delivered a new event: The Haunted School House. Run by the Webelos II's, the Haunted Schoolhouse was visited by all Scouts and siblings.

Fall Campout a Huge Success! TOP

Over 60 Adults, Scouts and siblings attended the fall campout at Van Patten Woods in Wadsworth, IL. The weather was perfect, the food wonderful, and the entertainment spectacular!

Click on the above picture or this link for a slideshow of the event.

This campout featured the premiere of the Pack 71 Camp-olympics. Cubmaster Jim will give a full report soon. As usual, the highlight of the evening was the campfire activities. Jokes, skits and fellowship were on display for all to see and enjoy. On Sunday, Asst. Cubmaster Stahnke displayed a homemade device that illustrated how air and water can propel a soda pop bottle into "orbit."

If you didn't make this campout, don't worry. Spring's event promises new thrills and suprises for all attendees.

A Perfect Ride! TOP

More than 20 people took part on the annual Pack 71 bike ride from Copeland School to Independence Grove on a sunny, breezy day.

A good time was had by all, as Mr. and Mrs. Manfredini finished their three-year run as bike-ride coordinators in awesome fashion. (Many thanks to them!)

During our snack break at the Grove, Tim Barclay of M&M Cyclery was our guest speaker. He discussed bike-safety tips and handed out water bottles to the boys. We saw A LOT of other runners and bikers on this fine day -- and wildlife that included a blue heron, turtle -- and possibly even a coyote after we returned to Copeland! (As a group, we suffered only a few scraped knees. another sign of a great outing!)

A Lot of Fishing. Just a Little Catching! TOP

Our fishing derby was threatened to be called off due to poor weather, but Mother Nature cooperated and stopped raining for 90 minutes as the Scouts of the Pack decided to see if anyone could land "The Big One!"

Click on the Picture for a Slide Show.

While there was a lot of focused effort, it turns out that we only caught two fish. Grace M. landed the first one and shortly after many had left, Matt B. did, in fact, land the "Big One!"

2008 Car Wash Cleans UP! TOP

Cooperation is the Name of the Game for Libertyville Days! TOP

All Scouts Packs from Libertyville put their heads and sweat together to develop a float worthy of 2nd place in the Libertyville Days Parade. The "Pink Cadillac" was created, designed and built by the leadership of all the Packs with the help of many Scouts. Long nights were the norm as Gary Devroy spearheaded the cross-Pack effort.

The parade presentation went smoothly as all the kids had to opportunity to ride on the float or give out candy. The float took home the 2nd Place Trophy in the Community Organization Category. See the video below.

A special thanks goes out to North Shore Signs who so generously (again!) gave us access to his facility and tools.

We hear that volunteers are already exchanging ideas for next year's float!

Pack 71 Oversees Year End Flag Ceremony at Rockland School TOP

Dependable as ever, the scouts from Pack 71 oversaw the final day flag ceremony at Rockland School on June 9th. The Tigers displayed the proper respect befitting a year end ceremony.

Pack 71 Serves Those Who Served Us! TOP

Pack 71 participated in the community wide service project that coordinates all the Boy, Girl and Cub Scout Organizations to decorate the graves of veterans with American Flags at Lakeside Cemetery. Judy Zemeske, who has coordinated the event over the past four years said "This is the fourth year for the event and each year we get more and more participation."

Pack Picnic is Bittersweet TOP

The 2007-2008 Year End Pack Picnic went off without a hitch. Sure, it was a bit cool, but the Scouts running around generated enough energy and heat to keep everyone warm. Many thanks to all the volunteers who assisted with this event.

Click on the picture for a slide show.

At the Picnic, the Pack said goodbye to Mr. Rich who served the Pack as it's Treasurer over the past few years. He's moving to Michigan and will be a great asset to a lucky Scout Pack over there.

Thanks for all your contributions, Mr. Rich. We'll miss you!

Pack 71 "Grinds" Away at Recycling TOP

With the leadership of Mrs. Zemeske, Pack 71 is contributing to the Nike "Reuse A Shoe" program which takes used shoes and generates "Nike Grind" that is used for basketball courts and a variety of other uses.

Over the 3 days between, May 1-3, the Pack delivered hundreds of shoes to Solid Waste Agency of Lake County in Gurnee. Once again, many thanks to Mrs. Zemeske for her tireless efforts to make our community a better place.
